TYREDECK QUICK ANSWER

Compare the work, parts, fluids, VAT and optional extras in a garage quote before choosing on headline price.

Compare the work, not just the total

Two garage quotes with the same label can include different parts, fluids and labour. Ask for an itemised VAT-inclusive quote and compare it with the manufacturer schedule before deciding which is cheaper.

What is included?

Check labour, engine oil quantity and specification, oil filter, air/cabin/fuel filters where applicable, spark plugs, brake or coolant changes, inspections, diagnostic scans, consumables and disposal charges. Make sure “check” and “replace” are not being treated as the same thing.

Parts and fluids

Ask whether parts are manufacturer-branded, OEM-equivalent or another specification and whether that matters for your vehicle or warranty position. For fluids, the correct approval can matter more than the brand on the container.

What could be added later?

Ask how the garage handles additional work found during inspection. A sensible process is to contact you with the defect, price and urgency before proceeding. Be wary of a low headline quote that excludes predictable fees or automatically bundles unrelated add-ons.

What should you receive?

Keep the invoice, itemised work, service record and any measurements supplied. If a garage recommends tyres, brakes or alignment, ask for the measurements or reason so you can make an informed decision.

What to do next

Use this guide to prepare and ask better questions, not as a remote diagnosis. If a safety-critical defect is suspected, avoid unnecessary driving and arrange a competent physical inspection.
