Prepare lamps, windscreen, washers, wipers and the driver’s field of vision before the test.
A simple area to pre-check thoroughly
The MOT includes lamps, reflectors and relevant electrical equipment as well as the driver’s field of vision, glass, mirrors, wipers and washers. Many of these items can be checked at home without dismantling anything.
Walk around every lamp
Operate dipped and main beam, position lamps, indicators, hazards, brake lamps, rear lamps, fog lamps and reversing lamps where applicable. Check lenses for serious damage and make sure lamps are secure. If a bulb fails repeatedly, investigate the electrical cause rather than treating replacement as permanent repair.
Windscreen, mirrors and view
Clean the glass inside and out and assess chips or cracks, particularly in the driver’s swept view. Mirrors need to provide the required view and be secure. Remove phone mounts, air fresheners or other items if they materially obstruct the driver’s field of vision.
Wipers and washers
Wipers should clear the relevant area effectively without leaving the screen unusable. Fill screenwash and check the jets actually deliver fluid to the glass. Split rubber, missing blade sections or a failed washer pump should be dealt with before the test.
Headlamp aim
Headlamp aim is a measured MOT item. A home visual check can reveal a clearly displaced lamp after impact, but correct aim needs suitable equipment. If one beam appears obviously high, low or skewed, ask a garage to check it.
What to do next
Use this guide to prepare and ask better questions, not as a remote diagnosis. If a safety-critical defect is suspected, avoid unnecessary driving and arrange a competent physical inspection.
