TYREDECK QUICK ANSWER

An MOT is a statutory roadworthiness inspection; servicing is maintenance. Understand why one does not replace the other.

MOT and service do different jobs

An MOT is a statutory inspection against defined standards. A service is preventative and scheduled maintenance intended to keep the vehicle operating correctly and to replace or inspect items at the intervals specified by the manufacturer. One does not replace the other.

What happens at an MOT?

The tester follows the DVSA inspection manual and records defects using MOT categories. The inspection focuses on prescribed safety, roadworthiness and environmental items. It is a snapshot of the vehicle at test time rather than a forecast of future reliability.

What happens at a service?

Service content depends on the vehicle and the package purchased. It may include engine oil and filter replacement, fluid checks, additional filters, spark plugs or other scheduled items, plus inspections. The manufacturer’s schedule—not a generic garage label—is the best starting point for what is due.

Should you service and MOT together?

Combining appointments can be convenient, but ask what order the garage uses and what is included. If the car has known maintenance due, completing necessary work before the MOT can make sense. Do not authorise a vague “full service” without seeing the itemised work and checking it against the schedule.

Keep the records separate

Keep MOT results, invoices and service history. A pass certificate is evidence of an MOT result; it is not evidence that scheduled maintenance was completed. Likewise, a service invoice does not certify that the vehicle passed an MOT.

What to do next

Use this guide to prepare and ask better questions, not as a remote diagnosis. If a safety-critical defect is suspected, avoid unnecessary driving and arrange a competent physical inspection.
